Dolphins and Seals and Mermaids, Oh My!

Today Milan and I met friends in downtown Ningbo for a fun day on the town. We decided to go to Ocean World, a Sea-Wold-like aquarium, China style. That means there were mermaids and Spiderman and multiple episodes of slow dancing with marine animals to Celine Dion Titanic music. There are more pictures up on Flickr for your viewing pleasure.

First we saw the dolphin and seal show, which was pretty awesome. It has been awhile (like 25 years) since I have been to Sea World, but I was very impressed by the trainers riding on dolphin backs, the seals doing all sorts of cute tricks, and trainers slow dancing with dolphins or seals, both to the Titanic tune. I don't know, maybe this is a common dolphin show act. But does Sea World include an act to the Star Wars theme song? I don't think so.

Next we headed over to the aquarium building and saw some really cool fish that I had never seen before. We were there with about 4 other Chinese people, so Milan and his buddy had the run of the place. And then we came to the sea turtle feeding area where, for 5 kuai (about 70 cents) you can feed the sea turtles. They were hungry guys, snapping and fighting over the bits of fish heads and lettuce. The kids had fun and no one got their fingers snapped off.

After a few more neat tanks of cool fish we came to the highlight of Ningbo Ocean World - the mermaid show, with a guest appearance by Spiderman. As you can see in the photo, they were pretty convincing mermaids and both boys will probably grow up thinking that mermaids are just another marine mammal that live in the deep blue sea. Milan and his buddy watched the entire mermaid show, but were less interested when the guy in the scuba gear showed up to feed the sharks and slow dance with more marine creatures (a sea turtle and shark this time). At this point the moms stayed biting our fingernails and hoping the guy wouldn't get eaten by the sharks and the boys went back to playing with the retractable barrier in front of the giant sea shell.

And then we went to McDonald's.

What a great day!
