Street Art

I have mixed feelings about graffiti, street art, whatever you want to call it. I was obsessed with BORF during his heyday in Washington, DC and was constantly on the lookout for new street art on my Metro ride from the Maryland burbs to downtown. But I understand that defacing of public property is not a nice thing when it happens on your building or dumpster in a not-so-nice message. I get it.

But no matter how I feel about it, street art in Buenos Aires is one of the first things that really struck me here. On the running path along the Rio de la Plata there is a constant wall of colorful, impressive, amazing street art. This wall runs along the side of the train tracks and I love running and seeing the characters and amazing paintings. I saw an artist working on a wall in the middle of the day on a Saturday, which leads me to believe the authorities are not so concerned about stopping grafitti here. I did a google search and found that there are guided tours of street art downtown, works of art that makes our suburb murals look like amateurs.

I took a few pictures around the park area near school a couple weeks ago:

And then there are some that are so well done and I think, Aw, isn't it a shame that someone wrote graffiti over that nice graffiti? I guess it goes with the territory.

Many of the ex-pats I have met here complain about the graffiti and the dirty sidewalks, but I can't help loving the street art. I will try to get out on the trail with a camera soon to get pictures of my favorites, my running partners who mark my progress on the trail.

Speaking on running, Tim and I ran in the Buenos Aires half marathon this past weekend. No pictures to show for it, but we both finished in good time and had a great time.
