Just when I thought I knew the alphabet

Yesterday in Milan's Chinese Art School, the English alphabet song was playing over the speaker system in the lobby. Since I usually can't understand the music that plays in the grocery store or mall, it is always very noticeable when the songs are in English. So I started singing along in my head

A-B-C-D-E-F-G
H-I-J-K...

You all know the song, sing it with me!

But then they made one small change. Instead of the version I am used to where we mush together "L-M-N-O-P" in two notes, the Chinese version puts "O-P" in the next musical phrase:

H-I-J-K-L-M-N
O-P-Q, R-S-T
U-V-W, X-Y-Z

It throws the whole second half of the song off kilter, and I thought I was losing my mind for a minute! A few minutes of singing it the Chinese way made me realize why we sing it the way we do: so it rhymes. But the Chinese version avoids the confusing "Elemenopee" section.

It's these little things, seemingly small changes, that at times make me feel like I am living on another planet!
